And now a few words to describe this land….

Salentu: lu sule, lu mare, lu jentu. The dialect phrase with which the Salentines describe their land is the most concise and effective to understand what we are talking about when we say “Salento”.

The sun (lu sule): bright, hot, until it becomes extreme and blinding.

The sea (lu mare): which embraces the peninsula with a 300 km coastline and with water colors ranging from the light blu of the sand beaches to the deep green of the karst marine caves.

The wind: sirocco or north wind, which keeps the sea calm or makes it stormy, which brings moist heat or which mitigates the summer heat and lowers temperatures.

Salento with a thousand faces: that of the agricultural inland, the ancient villages, the Messapians and Romans archaeological remains, the Salento “Grecìa”, the Baroque architecture and Lecce stone facades, and that of the sandy coasts of the Jonian Sea, the high cliffs of the Adriatic, the splendid sea karst caves.

The more traditional Salento, dedicated to agriculture, to the craftsmanship of ceramics, copper, wrought iron, Lecce stone, fabrics and lace, and the more contemporary one with its trendy clubs and beaches where you can sip a drink at sunset.
