Castro

Castro is called the "balcony of Salento" for its position perched on top of a cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

The village is divided into two areas: Castro Marina, where the ancient port is located, and Castro Superiore, built on a hill with a beautiful panoramic position.

It’s very interesting the Castle located in this highest part of the city. It dates back to the middle of the sixteenth century. The structure is really impressive: 900 mq. plus another 30 mq. of inner courtyard with a rectangular shape. It’s a beautiful structure of Angevin origin that was attacked several times by the Turks, destroyed and rebuilt.
In addition you can not fail to visit the beautiful Cathedral, also located in Castro Superiore. It was built in 1171 on the ruins of an ancient Greek temple,

Near Castro, the Zinzulusa Cave is worth a visit, with stalactites and stalagmites that look like rags lying to dry (the "zinzuli" in Salento dialect), one of the most famous and important example of Italian coastal karst.
