Lecce and its Barocco

Thanks to its splendid Baroque architecture Lecce is also called the “Southern Florence”. 

Elegant, with it’s many ancient buildings and churches built in Lecce stone and finely embossed, Lecce is charming place to visit.

In particular:

The Cathedral
Located in Piazza del Duomo, in the historic city centre, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built in 1144.
In 1659 the cathedral was rebuilt in “Barocco leccese” style.

Roman arena and Piazza Sant’Oronzo
In the wonderful central Piazza Sant’Oronzo there are the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre. It was built in the Augustan Age and could host over 25,000 spectators. 

Santa Croce Basilica
The Basilica of Santa Croce is located in the historic centre of Lecce. It was built between the 16th and 17th century. The main portal has the emblems of Philip III of Spain, Maria of Enghien, and Walter VI, count of Brienne. In the upper part of the facade is the wonderful rose window.
Santa Croce Basilica is one of the best examples of Barocco Leccese style.

The Palaces
Visiting the city it is possible to admire splendid palaces, including the Archbishop's Palace, Palazzo Vernazza, Palazzo Carafa, Palazzo Adorni, Government Palace (former Celestine convent), Seminary Palace, House of the Jesuits or Ex convent.

Carlo V Castle
Lecce Castle is located at East of the city center, near Piazza Sant'Oronzo.
It was built as a new military fortress in 1539 by order of Emperor Charles V of Habsburg
